What is a magnet switch and how does it work?
A magnet switch is actuated contactlessly via a magnetic field or switching magnet. It opens and closes a connected circuit. It can also be used to switch between circuits. The actual switching function is performed by a reed switch, also known as a reed contact or reed sensor. A reed switch is a magnetic sensor, consisting of moving, ferromagnetic switch contacts. They are hermetically sealed from environmental influences in a glass envelope. A outer magnetic field – for example, of a permanent magnet – moves the contacts without touching them, and performs the switching function by opening or closing a contact. The switching behaviour of the magnet switch depends on the polarity and direction of approach of the permanent magnet.
Where are magnet switches used?
Magnet switches can be found in every area of mechanical and plant engineering. The switches are used as magnetic proximity switches, to contactlessly detect the position of a component or door, for example. They can be used to monitor, position and control rotating or lifting motions. Typically, they are used for control and counting functions in equipment engineering. One advantage of reed switches is their hermetically sealed construction, which makes them resistant to external influences. Magnet switches can be used:
- in the processing of metal, plastic, stone or wood
- in the food and beverage industry
- in the chemical industry
- in warehousing and transport facilities
- in pneumatics and hydraulics
- in alarm systems
- in lifts and door locking mechanisms
Various magnetic switch series from ASA-Schalttechnik
Magnet switches from ASA-Schalttechnik are encapsulated with casting resin, and thanks to protection class IP67, offer effective protection against dirt, gases and moisture. The switches in a PA or metal design are vibration-proof, shock-resistant and maintenance-free. They are characterised by low contact resistance, high switching frequency, and numerous contact functions and supported switching capacities.
ASA-Schalttechnik differentiates between magnet switches in a round or rectangular shape. Supported contact functions are NC, NO and changeover (also bistable) with different switching capacities, switching currents and transport currents. The standard range offers around 40 different housing shapes with a frontal or lateral direction of approach. The necessary switching magnets are also available as round magnets or rod magnets.
For extended temperature ranges and specific applications, ASA-Schalttechnik delivers special solutions and custom-built magnet switches made of special materials, on request.
