Contact protection measures
Reed contacts are sensitive to overloads. Exceeding the maximum permissible current values or high voltage peaks - as occur when switching capacitive or inductive loads - can lead to severe damage to the reed contacts. There is no all-encompassing protection against this. However, depending on the load to be switched, premature failure of the reed contacts can be avoided. Here are some examples of protective circuits for different types of load:
When light bulbs, capacitors or other loads connected to long supply lines (cable capacitance) are switched on, high current surges occur. These can cause serious damage, even welding of the contacts. The current surge can be largely reduced by a limiting resistor in series with the reed contact. This ensures reliable protection and extends the service life of the reed contact many times over.
What is a level switch and how does it work?
Level switches are also known as float switches. They are used to reliably measure the fill level in containers of liquids. Level switches from ASA Schalttechnik are contactless and wear-free magnetic switching devices. They are equipped with a moveable float, which is fitted with a ring magnet. The float moves up or down, according to the fill level of the medium. The ring magnet on the float triggers the reed contacts on the switch tube. These contacts are designed as NC, NO and changeover contacts.
Where are level switches used?
Level switches are used in many different areas. They offer solutions for the reliable detection, monitoring, regulation and control of the fill level for liquids such as oil, water, acids or lyes. For example, they can be used as fill level controllers, overfill protection, water level sensors, oil level sensors, or for fully automatic cycle control in filling and refilling systems. Typical industries for these areas of application are heavy industry, the food and beverage industry, medical technology or the chemical industry.
Various level switches from ASA Schalttechnik
ASA Schalttechnik offers a large selection of level switches made of different materials. They are equipped with terminal heads, floats, switch tubes and switching points (reed contacts) and can be compiled in a modular system with many different assemblies, according to individual requirements. For example, floats are available in a spherical or cylindrical shape, made of plastic or stainless steel. The product range also includes a miniature series of float switches with an eight-millimetre switch tube. The float switches, encapsulated in insulating material and metal, can be fitted with multiple switching points and fulfil protection class IP67 in accordance with IEC/EN 60529.
Alongside the standard variants, level switches are available in special variants for specific applications with special screw fittings, special wiring, special alloys, additional switching points and reed contacts or special terminal heads, floats and switch tubes. They fulfil specific requirements, such as extended temperature and pressure ranges.
