What are the requirements for switching devices in medical and laboratory technology?
Medical applications are a highly sensitive area. Devices used in these applications are subject to high requirements. The switching devices used, such a medical foot switches, must comply with strict medical standards. They must be as hygienic as possible and easy to clean. In addition, they must offer intuitive and safe operation, high reliability and operating certainty, as well as an ergonomic design.

ASA Schalttechnik offers a selection of suitable switching devices, such as foot switches or switching consoles in various designs, specially for use in medical applications and laboratories.
The medical foot switches in the FM series are approved in accordance with medical standard IEC 60601-1:2005. This approval includes certificates for:
- general safety specifications,
- serviceability,
- HF surgical equipment and accessories,
- laser devices, and
- X-ray equipment.
The foot switches are available with one to six pedals. They are made of high-quality materials, such as thermoplastic glass-fibre-reinforced PA or aluminium casting alloy and fulfil protection class IPX8 in accordance with IEC/EN 60529. The switching devices are robust, stable, intuitive to operate, extremely hygienic and easy to clean. They feature a USB output with configuration software.
The foot switch portfolio is accompanied by optional additional functions and safety features, such as foldable protective hoods to prevent accidental actuation (for example, for use in laser surgery), or lockable transport brackets made of easily cleanable stainless steel for easy relocation and transportation of the switching devices.
Medical foot switches and consoles are available in customer-specific colours and can be printed with logos and symbols, on request. ASA Schalttechnik also delivers special custom solutions in small quantities.
